Baylor University is sharing a heartwarming yet bittersweet story as it announces the passing of Lady, its beloved bear mascot. At the age of 23, Lady peacefully left this world, leaving behind a legacy filled with joy, strength, and inspiration for the Baylor community. Beloved during her long tenure at the university, Lady wasn’t just a mascot but a cherished member of the family.
Miracle Bear
Lady’s life story is nothing short of extraordinary. She was born on January 31, 2002, at the West Coast Game Park in Oregon. Just five months later, in June 2002, she became part of the Baylor family. With her playful and curious nature, she quickly captured the hearts of students and alumni alike. Lady’s sister Joy was by her side throughout her life, and together they became symbols of Baylor’s spirit and resilience.
Active, Curious, Mischievous, Energetic
Lady was known for her playful antics and boundless energy. She brought joy to countless people during special events, from basketball games to homecomings, where she often made special appearances. Her curious spirit led her to explore her surroundings, embodying the lively spirit of the Baylor community. Whether she was splashing in her pool or munching on her favorite snacks, each moment spent with Lady was a treasured memory.
A New Home
Over the years, Lady faced significant health challenges, including major surgeries and treatments that paved the way for new advancements in veterinary care. In both 2019 and 2020, she underwent groundbreaking radiation therapy and surgical procedures, showing remarkable resilience and courage. After her final health challenge, she retired to an off-campus facility in May 2023 but continued to share her spirit through occasional visits back to campus.
Golden Years
In her later years, Lady enjoyed a peaceful life in a more relaxed environment, surrounded by loving caretakers and animals. Despite her retirement, she remained a beloved figure at Baylor, with many students reminiscing about the joy she brought during her active days on campus. Even though some students might not have known her in her prime, her legacy is cemented in the hearts of those who appreciate the special bond between Baylor and its mascots.
Memorial Contributions
As Baylor University prepares to honor Lady’s memory with a memorial alongside her sister Joy, they invite everyone to contribute to Lady’s legacy. Memorial contributions will support the enhancement of the Baylor Bear Habitat, ensuring that future generations can experience the wonderful bond that the Baylor Bears have fostered. Remembering Lady is not just about mourning her loss but celebrating the impact she had on the Baylor community. Contributions can be made online or through the university’s fundraising initiatives.
